2008 SA 1/4 PROOF QUARTER OUNCE GOLD KRUGERRAND
Reddish gold and sparkling with its 22mm diameter, the 1/4 oz gold Krugerrand stands out from common coins. Introduced by the South African Government in 1980 after the amazing success of it’s larger one ounce cousin, the 1/4 oz gold Krugerrand, allowed investors who couldn’t afford full Krugerrands to purchase gold in smaller lots. Gold has been recognized as a standard of value for thousands of years, and money changers have been trading it in counties around the world for centuries. The 1/4 oz gold Krugerrand is one quarter troy ounce of pure gold, but it does not weigh 1/4 oz. It is slightly heavier than that 1/4 ounce due to the copper it’s alloyed with. About 1/12 of the coin is not gold, simply because 24k gold would be too soft to handle easily, and would bend, scratch, and dent. The Krugerrand was designed from the the start as an investment vehicle for gold bullion- not as a coin with a legal tender value stamped on it. The Rand refinery supplies the 22k blanks to the South African Mint, who then stamp out what has become the gold standard in small gold investing, the Krugerrand.
